Designing Streets for People, Not Cars

The pedestrian experience is the most honest measure of a city's success. Streets that prioritise cars over people create cities that feel hostile, disconnected and noisy.

At Rathi Associates, our urban design work begins with a simple question — who is this space for? When the answer is people, the design changes fundamentally. Sidewalks widen. Trees appear. Crossings become safe and inviting.

Good street design is not about banning vehicles. It is about creating a hierarchy where walking, cycling and public transit are given equal — or greater — priority. The result is a city that breathes.

Our recent projects in Bangalore explore these ideas through mixed-use developments that place retail, cafes and public seating at ground level, creating streets that are alive from morning to night.
